A Unique Shade of Therapy
Provider Bio - Miranda Shumate

My interest in becoming a therapist came about through life experiences, beginning as early as age 12 when my grandmother passed away from cancer at the age of 52. Cancer was a scary, confusing disease to me, and I was not prepared to manage the devastation that accompanies the loss of a loved one, especially someone that I had a very close relationship with. A few years later, my parents decided to divorce, and everything I thought I knew about my family, and relationships in general, was turned upside down. I felt lost, scared, and unsure of how to move forward.
I struggled to find positive ways to cope with life’s stressors as a teen and young adult, and often turned to binge eating and excessive alcohol use for personal comfort. These coping mechanisms may have ‘felt good’ in the short-term, but I knew that these were not sustainable long-term solutions and could potentially lead to harming myself or others. With support from a nonjudgmental and collaborative therapist, I was able to gain deeper insight into my thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which empowered me to change my life for the better.
As a therapist, I understand that life is complicated and messy. I want to work alongside you to sort through the mess, and help you figure out how to live the life you’ve always imagined for yourself. In addition to talk therapy, I strongly encourage clients to adapt some type of yoga or mindfulness-based practice into their daily routine, even if it’s only for five minutes! Whether you are dealing with a new mental health diagnosis, hoping to work through relationship issues, or are struggling to manage a life transition, I would be grateful for the opportunity to help you on your path toward growth, healing, and recovery.
I’m an individual and couples’ therapist in Chicago and Denver with over 5 years of clinical experience. Using a nonjudgmental and collaborative approach, it is my goal to help clients gain a better understanding of their mental health, navigate challenging situations, and develop healthy coping skills.
